Prof. Charles Grant

Bio

Professor Grant has been a member of staff of the International Centre for Environmental &
Nuclear Sciences (ICENS) University of the West Indies for the past 30 years. In 2015, he
assumed the post of Director General having served as a Senior Research Scientist and
Head of the Nuclear Analytical Laboratory. He obtained a master’s degree in Radiation and
Environmental Physics in 1992, from the University of Surrey in England, with specializations
in Reactor Physics and Neutron Activation Analysis.
In 2015, he served as Principal Director and Project Manager for the core conversion (fuel
change) from Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) to Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) of the
research reactor.
He is also an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Expert in the Field of
Research Reactors and Neutron Activation Analysis and has performed expert missions in
Africa, Europe, Latin and Central America and the Caribbean.
Has contributed extensively to the research process as a peer reviewer for four international
Journals, published over thirty-five peer-reviewed articles; two book chapters, and numerous
technical publications, and also conceptualized and spearheaded the drafting of the IAEA’s
Regional Strategic Profile for The English-Speaking Caribbean 2020–2025. This document
will be used to prepare a strategic programme framework to identify and prioritize the
region’s most pressing problems and needs that could be addressed using nuclear
technologies in the period up to 2025.
Prof. Grant has served on numerous Boards and Committees and currently serves as
Chairman of the Hazardous Waste Laboratory Clean-up Ad Hoc Committee, and the Nuclear
Energy Working Group Committee, both convened by the Ministry of Science, Energy,
Telecommunication and Transport (MSETT).
In 2020, he became a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a recipient of the University of the
West Indies Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence, and was also promoted to the rank of
Professor.
Professor Grant also received the Principal’s Research Award for Best Research Publication
in 2023
