Messages from the Chairman & Executive Director

Board Chairman- Dr. Parris Lyew-Ayee Jr

Welcome to the SRC’s 31st Science and Technology Conference, this year under the theme “Harmony In Innovation: Unleashing The Power Of Nuclear Applications For Sustainable Development”. There have been a lot of research in nuclear sciences, ranging from energy and the environment, to cancer treatments and agricultural applications. Now, we are taking the veils off and sharing these this year, with an integrated focus to the general public, to remove the stigma of these technologies and showing how research is having a tangible impact on the lives of Jamaicans and those of the region.

This year, we are grateful for the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which has been increased its level of support for regional research in nuclear technology applications. Its mandate, for the peaceful use of the atom, affords cutting edge research to be done in truly life changing ways. Jamaica has been a member of the IAEA for decades, and we are now on the cusp of entering a new era in that relationship.

A lot has happened since our last conference – our National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy has been promulgated, and we completed a UNESCO-funded cross-sectional analysis of science practitioners across Jamaica. These, together, will help to map out science programs for Jamaica, dealing with integrated services and network building, which can improve efficiencies in the practice of science, as well as coordinating issues related to procurement of scientific goods and services and managing waste. The SRC itself is also aligning itself to helping the private sector in its R&D strategies, thereby assisting in developing small and medium enterprises and the growth of local industries and exports.

Science is more than just laboratories and test tubes, and beyond the domain of just academia and government labs. Science is all of you participating in this event. We look forward to your participation, engagement and feedback.

Dear Colleagues, Partners, and Friends,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 31st National Science and Technology Conference, hosted by the Scientific Research Council (SRC) of Jamaica. This year’s conference, themed ‘Harmony in Innovation: Unleashing the Power of Nuclear Applications for Sustainable Development,’ promises to be an extraordinary gathering of minds dedicated to advancing the frontiers of science and technology.

As we converge here at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Downtown Kingston, from October 29 to November 1, 2024, we are presented with a unique opportunity to explore the transformative potential of nuclear applications in agriculture, water, medicine, energy, and beyond. Our conference will bring together experts, practitioners, policymakers, and innovators from across the globe to share knowledge, forge new collaborations, and inspire innovative solutions that address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

The SRC is proud to be at the forefront of this important dialogue, and we are thrilled to be working in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Centre of Nuclear and Environmental Sciences (ICENS) and the Hazadous Substance Regulatory Authority (HSRA) to make this event truly impactful. We have also partnered with the Association of General Practitioners of Jamaica to offer Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, ensuring that our discussions not only enrich our understanding but also contribute to the professional growth of our attendees.

I extend a warm welcome to all participants, speakers, and sponsors. Your presence here underscores our collective commitment to harnessing the power of science and technology for sustainable development. I encourage you to take full advantage of the diverse sessions, networking opportunities, and knowledge-sharing platforms that this conference offers.

Thank you for joining us in what I am confident will be an inspiring, enlightening, and productive event. Together, let us continue to innovate, collaborate, and lead the way towards a sustainable future.

Welcome to the SRC 31st National Science and Technology Conference!
